Common Refrigerants Used in HVAC and Refrigeration

  • R-22 (HCFC-22) — A legacy refrigerant once standard in residential and light commercial air conditioning. Production and import of R-22 for new equipment ended years ago under prior EPA phase-out rules, but many older systems still in service require recovery and, when needed, increasingly costly service refrigerant.
  • R-410A (HFC blend) — For roughly the past two decades, the standard refrigerant for residential and light commercial cooling systems. R-410A remains legal to use for servicing existing equipment, though new equipment is transitioning to lower-GWP alternatives under current EPA rules, and virgin R-410A supply is becoming more limited and costly over time.
  • R-32 — A lower-GWP refrigerant increasingly used in newer residential and light commercial systems as part of the industry’s shift away from higher-GWP refrigerants like R-410A.
  • R-454B — A newer, lower-GWP (A2L classification) refrigerant that many manufacturers have adopted as a primary replacement for R-410A in new equipment.
  • R-134a — Commonly used in certain chillers, some refrigeration equipment, and historically in automotive systems; also undergoing transition to lower-GWP alternatives in many applications.
  • R-404A — Widely used in commercial refrigeration (walk-in coolers, freezers, supermarket refrigeration), though it carries a high GWP and is being phased down in favor of lower-impact alternatives.
  • R-407C — Another HFC blend used in some commercial and light commercial cooling applications, often as a retrofit option in systems originally designed for older refrigerants.

Because refrigerant regulations continue to evolve — including phase-down schedules, new equipment requirements, and shifting service refrigerant availability — it’s worth confirming current EPA guidance for any specific refrigerant before making equipment or service decisions.
