You may have heard your HVAC technician mention “R-410A” or “R-32.” Does it matter which one your system uses? Yes — quite a bit. The type of refrigerant affects how well your system runs, how safe it is, and how much you’ll pay for repairs. Here’s a simple breakdown of what you need to know.
Why Are Refrigerants Changing?
Governments around the world are working to reduce refrigerants that harm the environment. In the U.S., a law called the AIM Act pushes manufacturers toward refrigerants with a lower “Global Warming Potential” (GWP). The lower the GWP, the less harm a refrigerant leak does to the environment.
Older refrigerants like R-410A have a high GWP. Newer refrigerants like R-32 and R-454B have a much lower GWP — around one-third of R-410A’s impact.
R-22: The Old Refrigerant
If your system is older (built before about 2010), it may still use R-22. This refrigerant already went through its own phase-out, and prices shot up fast: from about $10 per pound in 2015 to $50–$80 per pound by 2020.
What this means for you: If your system still uses R-22, repairs can get expensive. Replacing the system is often the smarter financial choice.
R-410A: Today’s Standard (For Now)
R-410A has been the go-to refrigerant for years. Here’s where things stand:
- New equipment can no longer be built using R-410A (as of 2025).
- Your existing R-410A system is still 100% legal to run and repair — there’s no rush to replace it.
- R-410A prices are climbing. In 2026, prices average $80–$150 per pound installed, up 20–40% since 2024.
- Prices are expected to keep rising over the next few years, similar to what happened with R-22.
What this means for you: Your current system isn’t obsolete. But if it’s getting older, refrigerant costs may make repairs less worthwhile over time.
R-32 and R-454B: The New Standard
These are the two refrigerants replacing R-410A in new equipment. Both have a much lower environmental impact and are considered “mildly flammable” (a small, well-managed safety difference from older refrigerants).
R-454B
- Used by most major brands: Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York, and American Standard
- Sold under different brand names (like Puron Advance®) — but it’s the same refrigerant underneath
R-32
- Used mainly by Daikin and in mini-split (ductless) systems
- Has been used for years in Asia and Europe, so the supply chain is well established
Important: You can’t simply add R-32 or R-454B to an older R-410A system. These refrigerants require new equipment built specifically for them.
What Does This Mean for Your Wallet?
There are three costs to think about:
- New equipment costs more. Systems built for R-32 or R-454B cost about 15–30% more upfront than older R-410A equipment. This is expected to come down over time as production ramps up.
- New refrigerant costs more — for now. R-454B and R-32 currently cost more per pound than R-410A. That gap should shrink as supply increases.
- Long-term costs should even out. As the newer refrigerants become standard, parts and service costs are expected to stabilize.
Should You Repair or Replace?
It depends on a few simple questions:
- How old is your system? If it’s over 10–12 years old and already showing wear, this is a good time to consider replacing it.
- How serious is the current problem? A small repair is very different from a major one.
- What’s your budget right now? There’s no need to rush. R-410A systems are still fully legal to run and repair.
One important note: R-410A is not banned. Your current system is not suddenly illegal to use. If a salesperson tells you otherwise to create urgency, that’s worth questioning.
