2019 Refrigerants – What is the Montreal Protocol?

Come 2020, any and all equipment that utilizes R-22 refrigerants will either have to be phased out or retrofitted to utilize more environmentally safe refrigerants. The Montreal Protocol which calls for this ban on chemicals and substances that have proven to damage the environment has been a key piece of the puzzle for environmental conservation and the health of the ozone layer.

The Montreal Protocol was originally meant to minimize and possibly reverse the damage to our ozone layer. Its main goal was to educate and spread awareness about the environmental effects of chlorofluorocarbons found in commonly-used refrigerants. Additionally, it launched global campaigns urging for the removal of these CFCs. Upon its enactment in 1987, an agreement to pull out or phase out the distribution and production of these harmful chemicals was signed by a majority of the world’s nations.

Ideally, the protocol mandates that the U.S. should have reduced its R-22 consumption by 90% in January 1, 2015. Although the EPA continues to strictly implement the guidelines on R-22 consumption, and has so far done a good job in doing so, a number of industrial users are still using and in possession of this type of refrigerant.

Businesses that don’t follow environmental protocols can be penalized heavily by the EPA, so hiring a competent, professional refrigerant services company to help you out is definitely a must. We at Refrigerant Services LLC have the following options available so transitioning from R-22 doesn’t have to be a huge hassle, and may even earn you back some money.

The Buy-Back Program

In our buy-back program, we recover used, contaminated or even burnt refrigerants and pay you for them. With this hassle-free program we give you several options: we either give you back good-as-new refrigerants, buy it from you, or exchange it for another EPA-approved type of refrigerant.

When recovering your refrigerants, we make sure to squeeze every last bit of remaining refrigerant while removing contaminants which may still be present in them. This is our way of making sure that you get the highest value for your refrigerants.

Additionally, we work quickly and efficiently so that your daily business operations are not interrupted nor hampered. To avoid accidents like leaks and even wastes, we separate the refrigerant from the contaminants using leading-edge technology to ensure that we extract the highest purity and volume possible.

The Clean Exchange Program

Our clean exchange program enables you to swap your expired or otherwise useless refrigerant containers with clean, up-to-date and DOT certified cylinders. We handle all kinds of cylinders ranging from full to empty and we retrieve even those that have expired. Not only that, we pay you for every drop of refrigerant that we can recover from them. We are well-equipped to handle containers of all sizes starting from 30 pounds to as much as 125 pounds. Our operation takes care of everything from pickup, consolidation and delivery. On top of that, we offer complete and detailed EPA documentation for all clients.
