R-11 Refrigerant

Learn about R-11 refrigerant, its applications in HVAC systems, and why proper disposal or recycling is essential to protect the environment and comply with EPA regulations. Brought to you by Refrigerant Services LLC.

What Is R-11 Refrigerant?

Also known as trichlorofluoromethane or CFC-11, is a chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerant that has been widely used in large commercial HVAC systems, chillers, and industrial refrigeration units. It’s also been commonly used as a blowing agent for insulation foams and other manufacturing processes.

With a low boiling point and high stability, it was once praised for its efficiency in heat transfer. However, it was phased out under the Montreal Protocol due to its high ozone-depleting potential (ODP).

Common Uses of R-11 Refrigerant

Though it is no longer produced or imported in the U.S., older equipment still in operation may contain R-11. Common historical uses included:

  • Centrifugal chillers in large commercial buildings
  • Insulation foam production (as a blowing agent)
  • Solvent cleaning in electronics manufacturing
  • Air conditioning systems in older facilities

Because it has such a long atmospheric lifetime, any remaining units must be handled with care.

Why Proper Disposal or Recycling Is Crucial

1. Environmental Protection

R-11 is a Class I ozone-depleting substance. Even small leaks can release harmful chemicals into the atmosphere, damaging the ozone layer and contributing to climate change. Responsible handling helps reduce environmental harm.

2. Regulatory Compliance

The EPA strictly regulates the recovery, recycling, and destruction of R-11 under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. Improper disposal can lead to hefty fines and legal consequences for building owners and contractors.

3. Limited Supply & High Value

It is no longer produced, yet there is still a high demand for maintaining legacy equipment. Reclaiming and recycling the refrigerant allows for safe reuse while minimizing the need for illegal imports or unsafe alternatives.

4. Safe Handling and Storage

Due to its toxicity and chemical properties, R-11 must be handled by EPA-certified technicians with the proper equipment and storage containers. Partnering with a professional ensures safety for both people and property.
